How to Recognize Roofing Sales Pressure Tactics
After every Colorado hailstorm, the door-knockers arrive with scripts designed to get your signature today. Here's how to recognize the tactics — and what to do instead.

The common tactics
- 'I was just at your neighbor's — they all signed.' Social proof, real or invented. Your neighbor's decision is not your due diligence.
- 'This price is only good today.' False urgency. Legitimate quotes are good for 30+ days; high-pressure expirations are a control tactic.
- 'We'll cover your deductible.' Illegal in Colorado under CRS 6-22 — and a contractor offering it is telling you exactly who they are.
- 'Sign now so we can get you on the schedule.' Manufactured scarcity. Good roofers are busy; they don't need your signature tonight.
- 'Your roof is an emergency.' Sometimes true after a storm — but get a second opinion before emergency language becomes an emergency signature. Real emergencies get emergency roofing (tarping/dry-in), not a full replacement contract at the door.
- 'We handle everything with your insurance.' They can't — the claim is yours. Contractors who promise to 'maximize your claim' are often the ones committing fraud in your name.
The storm-chaser pattern
Out-of-state crews follow hail across the country. Tells: out-of-state plates, no local office, recently created business entity, high-pressure door sales, and unwillingness to provide local references from before the storm. They'll be gone before warranty issues surface. Verify everything with how to verify local roofing contractor requirements.
Talk to a Colorado roofer. Feeling pressured by a salesperson? Slow down — then call to connect with an independent roofing professional for a no-pressure second opinion.
How to respond
- Never sign at the door. Take the card, take the quote, and take your time. Colorado gives you a 72-hour cancellation right even after signing — but not signing under pressure is better.
- Get your own inspection first. An independent roof inspection tells you what your roof actually needs before any salesperson tells you what they want to sell.
- Get three bids on identical specs — see how to choose a roofing contractor in Colorado.
- Check the contract against what to check before signing — especially the CRS 6-22 required elements.
FAQs
Is it illegal for a roofer to pay my deductible?
In Colorado, yes — CRS 6-22 prohibits contractors from rebating or absorbing insurance deductibles. It's also insurance fraud territory. Walk away from anyone offering it.
A roofer says my roof will be condemned — what do I do?
Get a second opinion from an independent inspector before believing catastrophic language. Urgency is the salesperson's best tool.
Should I let a roofer meet my insurance adjuster?
Having your contractor present at the adjuster meeting is common and often helpful — but choose the contractor first, on your timeline, not the adjuster's.
